SIM card or eSIM in Turkey

Tourists can buy a local SIM in Turkey, and it is registered with a foreign passport. Here is what to expect, and when a travel eSIM is easier.

Can a tourist buy a local SIM in Turkey?

Passport registration required

Vodafone Turkey says tourist prepaid SIMs are for customers with a foreign passport, and the passport number is declared during registration. Store staff activate the SIM. Turkey has three main mobile operators: Turkcell, Vodafone and Türk Telekom; this page has checked Vodafone's own pages only.

Buying on arrival

  • Vodafone says you can buy a SIM at the airport if you have just landed, or at its stores in town.
  • Bring your passport: you show it to the store staff, who register and activate the SIM.
  • Vodafone's tourist offer is called the Welcome to Turkey Pack. Its allowances, price and validity change, so check Vodafone's current page before you buy.
  • The new SIM fee can vary from shop to shop, according to Vodafone.

Buying an eSIM before you go

A travel eSIM from an international provider is bought online, so you do not need to visit a shop and show your passport to store staff on arrival. You install it on your home Wi-Fi before you travel and switch it on when you land. Check the provider's terms for any identity requirements.

  • Check that your phone supports eSIM and is network-unlocked.
  • Pick a plan that covers Turkey and the days you will be there.
  • Install it on Wi-Fi before departure, and switch it on after landing.
  • Keep your home SIM for calls and texts, and turn off data roaming on it.

When an eSIM is not the best choice

If you need a Turkish phone number, or you are staying for a longer time, a local SIM from an operator may suit you better. Vodafone also lists eSIM as part of its tourist pack, collected from its shops. International travel eSIMs are usually data-only.

Privacy: what you share

With a local SIM you show your passport at a shop or kiosk, and the operator registers it. A travel eSIM is bought online from the provider, so you do not hand your passport to a local shop. It is not anonymous: the provider still holds your email and payment details, some providers ask for an identity check in certain countries, and some countries have their own rules. Read the provider's privacy policy and follow local law. See the data and identity notes on each provider review.
