SIM card or eSIM in Armenia
Tourists can buy a local SIM in Armenia, but registration with a passport is required. Here is what to expect, and when a travel eSIM is easier.
Quick answer
Yes, tourists can buy a local SIM in Armenia, but you must show your passport when you buy it. If you would rather have data working the moment you land, a travel eSIM can be bought and installed before you fly.
Can a tourist buy a local SIM in Armenia?
Passport registration required
SIM card registration is required by law in Armenia, so you need to show your passport at the time of purchase. Three operators sell SIMs: Viva-MTS, Team Telecom and Ucom.
Buying on arrival
- All three operators have kiosks in the arrivals area at Zvartnots Airport, according to Armenia Discovery. Prices there are slightly higher than in the city.
- In Yerevan, operator stores are found in the centre and in most neighbourhoods. SIMs are also sold at some post offices and supermarkets.
- Bring your passport: you have to show it when you buy.
- Armenia Discovery notes that all three operators also offer digital activation by QR code, including at their airport booths.
Buying an eSIM before you go
A travel eSIM from an international provider is bought online, so you do not need to visit an operator kiosk or shop on arrival. You install it on your home Wi-Fi before you travel and switch it on when you land. Check the provider's terms for any identity requirements.
- Check that your phone supports eSIM and is network-unlocked.
- Pick a plan that covers Armenia and the days you will be there.
- Install it on Wi-Fi before departure, and switch it on after landing.
- Keep your home SIM for calls and texts, and turn off data roaming on it.
When an eSIM is not the best choice
If you need an Armenian phone number, or you are staying for a longer time, a local SIM or an operator eSIM is usually the better fit. Armenia Discovery notes that international travel eSIMs are data-only, tend to cost more than local SIMs, and do not give you an Armenian number.
Privacy: what you share
With a local SIM you show your passport at a shop or kiosk, and the operator registers it. A travel eSIM is bought online from the provider, so you do not hand your passport to a local shop. It is not anonymous: the provider still holds your email and payment details, some providers ask for an identity check in certain countries, and some countries have their own rules. Read the provider's privacy policy and follow local law. See the data and identity notes on each provider review.
